      This monument has been erected by the Government of Canada, to Laura Ingersoll Secord who saved her husband’s life in the battle on these heights, October 13, 1812. And who risked her own in conveying to Capt. Fitzgibbon, Information by which he won the victory of Beaver Dams Erected 1910

      Thanks to Laura Secord, nearly 500 Americans surrendered at Beaver Dams in 1813, and a British defeat was averted. She had overheard plans for a surprice attack and struggled alone through miles of dense bush to warn the commander of the British outpost. War of 1812.

      (on the headstone): "Here lieth the remains of An Unknown Brother whose body was washed ashore near the residence of Abram Martin, Esq., Louth, on 20th April 1877. This tombstone is erected to show that while deceased had only on his person certain symbols to distinguish him as a Freemason ...

      Cenotaph reads: "1914-1918 To perpetuate the names of our honoured dead and those who carried on in The Great War from the town of Mattawa and district. Erected by the Women's Institute Somme Courcelette Vimy-Ridge"
