      The Dufferin Street School was built in 1851 on the west side of Dufferin Street south of Victoria Street. It served as the school for Port Whitby from 1852-1915 when it was replaced by Brock Street School. Dufferin Street School has been a private residence since 1916.

      The Brunton Lumber Company was built at Whitby Harbor in 1941. The company manufactured ammunition boxes for Defense Industries Limited in Ajax during the Second World War. The company was later sold to General Mills and was destroyed by fire on February 8, 1951.

      The Argo Petroleum tanks were built at Whitby Harbour in 1938 at the east side of the harbour. The tanks were replaced by larger oil tanks around 1947 and were demolished in the early 1980s.

      Joe Stevens (1881-1963) was a commercial fisherman at Port Whitby from 1917 until his death. In 1947, he built a fishing boat which he named the 'Shirley S.', after his daughter. The boat was was in use until the mid 1960s and was broken up in 1978.

      The Prince Edward Island ferry, which used to take cars from Nova Scotia to PEI, was acquired by McNamara Marine around 1971. It was converted into a floating generating station and later acquired by Art Robertson. It was removed by court order to Toronto on 2 June 1992.

      In the summer of 1956, the western breakwater made of stone and log cribs was removed and replaced with a new breakwater constructed of stone and steel. The dock where the pier joined the breakwater was also reconstructed at this time. The remainder of the pier was rebuilt in 1958.

      In 1959 a signal tower was built near the east pier at Whitby Harbour.

      The waterspout occurred around 3pm on 26 January 1994 about 30 miles from the shore. It was 300 feet wide and 1600 feet high.
