      Enlisted, Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve, 1942. Assigned to the Royal Navy as Petty Officer. Sailed on Royal Mail ship Camaronia to Glasgow, then aboard HMS Ferret and HMS Weston. Did convoy duty in the Mediterranean, West Africa, and the Carribean.

      Volunteered for the First Special Service Force, a secret joint Canadian-American force nicknamed "The Devil's Brigade," which trained for paratrooping and sabotage missions behind enemy lines. Bill was with the Force from its mission in Kiska, Alaska, to its last mission in Menton, where he was killed in action, 1944.

      Radar Operator in the Royal Air Force, "on loan" from the Royal Canadian Air Force. Originally a member of the Lorne Scots Rifle Regiment, Alvin trained as a Radar Operator following Winston Churchill's call to Ottawa to recruit Canadian men to learn this new technology.

      Leading Aircraftman with #10 North Atlantic Squadron. Killed in action October 20, 1943, at the age of 21. Charles is buried in an isolated grave on Black Mountain, near St. Donat, Quebec. He is commemorated on the Oakville Trafalgar High School 1939-1945 Honour Roll.
