      People assembled waiting for the arrival of the train at Bracebridge Railway Station. This station was built in 1885 by the Mackenzie Brothers, one of whom became Sir William Mackenzie after he led the construction of the Canadian Northern Railway.

      The village of Utterson, located about halfway between Bracebridge and Huntsville, was a busy place in the early 1900's. It had at least two hotels, three general stores and a busy railway station.

      Built in 1893, the Medora was 122 feet long. In 1901-2, she was enlarged another 20 feet, making her the largest ship on the Muskoka Lakes until the Sagamo appeared in 1906. The Medora was retired in 1931, placed in dry dock and unfortunately gutted by fire in 1940.

      R.M.S. Segwun, the oldest Royal Mail Ship in the world, had been purchased in 1960 by the Town of Gravenhurst and maintained as a museum. In 1973, it was purchased by the Ontario Roadbuilders and fully restored. By 1981 it was sailing again and continues today in 2016. This postcard …

      The Nipissing, a sidewheeler built in 1871, was the first flagship of the Muskoka Lakes Navigation Company. She sailed until August of 1886 when she was consumed by fire. Her engines and boiler were salvaged and installed in a second Nipissing, the current Segwun.

      The Royal Muskoka Hotel, completed in 1902, was the largest and grandest hotel in Muskoka, accomodating 350 guests on 130 acres. Built and operated by the Muskoka Lakes Navigation Company, it was extremely popular until the hard times of the 1930's. Sadly, it burned to the ground in May 1952.
