      Alvin Bumby joined the Royal Canadian Signal Corps in Hamilton the first week after war broke out in 1939, and was overseas from 1939-1946. Irene Bumby worked "on relief" as a registered nurse in England from 1939-1944 and moved to Canada as a war bride in 1946.

      Arthur Kemp, from Burlington, became the Honorary Colonel, Lorne Scots. Donald Elmore Leaver served as infantry reinforcment officer. He joined the Algonquin Regiment and fought as a platoon commander in France, Belgium, and Holland. He was wounded in Holland in 1944.

      The Sinclairs met in Surrey, England, during the war, and married there. Margaret came to live in Canada in May 1946 after William returned home from the war in January 1946.

In 1924 Waterloo College was established, providing courses in post-secondary education. In 1960 Waterloo College became Waterloo Lutheran University, and in 1973 changed its name to Wilfrid Laurier University.
