      Behind the grill is Mr. Ross of Port Hope. Mr. George Mitchell (with beard) from Baltimore, Ont. and Reeve of Hamilton Township, is in the left foreground. The gentleman standing with him is possibly his brother Thomas. The fourth man is unknown.

      George Greer took over this established livery in 1901 and was known as a fine judge of horseflesh and his vehicles included the newer "rubber-tired runabouts". In was located on King Street in the general area of the old IGA, now Shopper's Drugmart.

      James Gillard was known for his paint and picture-framing business which was started in 1880. It was located opposite the first library building on King Street. In 1973 it became Gummer's Hardware.

      Located on the south side of King Street, west of Beebe's Boot Shop. Mr. McBride had the first Bell Telephone exchange of Cobourg in this store. It was taken over by F.J. McArthur, and in the 1980s was Sol Margles Ladies Wear.

      Mr. Minaker specialized in tailoring.

      Miss Annie Swan had her store on the north side of King Street.

      Dunham Hotel was located on the northeast corner of Division and Swayne Street. It was on the original site of the Windsor Hotel which burned in 1878. and later became The New Dunham. In 1981 an office block was built on this corner.

      Hooey & Sons had groceries but their main emphasis was on wines and liquors. The store had been in operation since 1847, about a year after the Globe Hotel was erected.

      This is the birthplace of Edwin C. Guillet. He was born on September 29th, 1898. The Guillet family arrived in Cobourg in 1832. Edwin not only wrote the book "Cobourg 1798-1948" but also many papers on Canadian history and 25 books on Canadian social history. He died in 1975.
