      The Abitibi company widened this chasm in the Sturgeon River to let the annual spring freshet waters of the river flow to Lake Nipissing following the ravaging 1979. The widening of the Sturgeon River rock-cut under the Canadian Pacific Railway bridge lessened yearly flood conditions for the Abitibi mill.

      The flow in the Sturgeon River during its height on May 1, 1979 was recorded by Ontario as being the maximum flow ever in the river which means it was a one in 300 year flood which destroyed the Field village and took away the Crystal Falls bridge.

      From late April into May 1979, the Sturgeon River rampage affected many communities including: Caldwell, Crystal Falls, Field, Sturgeon Falls, Springer Township and the Nipissing First Nation territory.

      The plot plan points out emergency entrances to keep contractors and visitors safe while visiting the site. This illustration is very interesting as it captures the location of many buildings that were owned and operated by companies since the early 1900s which includes: Abitibi, McMillan Bloedel and Weyerhaueser.

      Ottawa area lumber magnate J.R. Booth also used the Sturgeon River to send his annual timber cuts to his mills. This trek could last up to two years. He worked in the area doing the first cut of pine in the Sturgeon River basin.

      Heavy construction equipment is knocking the Weyerhaeuser buildings. Weyerhaeuser was the last mill in a string of different owners since the turn of the last century on a site known as Abitibi along the Sturgeon River.

      Filling in the mill site with new earth. When the Weyerhaeuser mill was dismantled and taken away, trucks were kept busy restoring the earth to Ministry of the Environment standards.

      Mill hauled away one load at the time from June to December of 2004.

      Environmental abatement was carried out in 2004 at the Weyerhaeuser site. The mill site was cleaned up from June to December of 2004.

      Shortly after the Canadian Pacific Railway pushed its way to Sturgeon Falls in 1882, investors began considering the building of a mill on the Sturgeon River where hydro could generated.
