    Image       Emmanuel Sleep (1824-1910) and Elizabeth Bone came to Canada from Cornwall, England. They had four sons and were prosperous farmers in the Oshawa-Whitby region. Their second eldest son, Robert Sleep (1858-1940) was born at Oshawa-on-the-Lake and married Johanna Jackson Bengough (1859-1934). Robert and Johanna had six children.

On 9 March 1938 he placed the first dial telephone call in Whitby to Albert W. Jackson, the town Reeve. The telephone exchange building was constructed between 1937-1938 on the west side of Brock Street between Colbourne and Dunlop Streets.
