      The CPR tracks often defined the boundaries of many communities in Northwestern Ontario. In Marathon, the rail line formed the eastern most boundary from 1944 until about 1954, when new subdivisions started sprouting up 'across the tracks'.

      A view of the rail tie sawmill at Penninsula Harbour, Marathon, Ontario. As part of an agreement with the Canadian Government and CPR, the mill had to do the de-watering process and provide logs for the rail tie mill.

      Originally, water for the town had to be drawn from the lake. It needed to be heavily chlorinated. Later water from an artesian well, behind the town was found to be clean, safe and provided a sufficient supply for all the town's needs. In 1957 a new 208,000 gallon water …
