      This group of men are in the tunnels under the old water tower. The water tower was built in 1904 and was demolished in 1950. Another water tower was built in Kinsmen Park in 1947 and demolished in September 1979. Today there is no water tower in Whitby.

      The children in this photo have a cross marked on their foreheads. This may be because it is traditional custom in the catholic religion to have an ashen cross marked on one's forehead at the beginning of Lent (40 days before Good Friday).
