      The conductor was the captain of the train and his job was more than just ticket collection as the entire crew was under his supervision. One of his more important obligations was making sure the train arrived on time with the proper cargo.

      The train man was considered an assistant conductor whose duties could include operating the brakes when the train needed to slow down and operating track switches.
