      This building was built in the early 1900s and changed hands often. It has been a bakery, furniture store and grocery store.

      Katie Bottomley (1881-1971) is the daughter of Thomas and Ellen Bottomley, who emigrated from England and settled in Machar township in 1885. Katie never married and inherited the family homestead from her parents. She worked on the farm with her brother, Tom, until they sold it in the 1940s.

      William Detta Sr. built Deer Lake Lodge in the 1920s, on the land of his parent's homestead. There was eleven bedrooms, a living room, pantry and store room. The lodge was filled with men during hunting season. William's family lived at an attached house and hosted the hunters.

      The Gore's bought this house in 1944; it is located 5 miles from South River, in Laurier Township. Jack and Frances were married in 1910, and Jack farmed until he moved to this house in 1944.

      This is probably John Hansen's house, a pioneer homesteader of the South River area. He received a 100 acre land grant at lots 8 and 9, Concession 4, in Machar Township. John Hansen farmed this land until his death in 1932.

      This house was built by H.Robb around 1885. In 1932 the house and surrounding farm was sold to Charles Quirt, who sold it to Henry and Emma Erven in 1935. They lived on the homestead until 1967, after which the land became the Eagle Lake Golf Course.

      The photograph was done by Joesph Ardiel. The hotel opened in 1887 and prospered as it was along the Grand Trunk Railway. The hotel burned down in 1909. The hotel boasted hot and cold baths, steam heat and electric lights. The rates were $1.00 to $1.50 a day.

      Chequers Inn was built around 1933-1935. It was owned and operated by Mr A.H. Arnold. It was closed in the early fifties.
