      The Whitby Maple Leafs were the 1938-1939 championship team in the Whitby Lions Club Midget Hockey League and winners of the Jack King Memorial Cup presented by Mundy Goodfellow Printing Company and the Whitby Gazette and Chronicle.

      The photograph was taken in the backyard of Honorary Fire Chief William Smith located at the north-east corner of Euclid and Mary Streets in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of winning the silver coffee urn.

      The Hewis family were butchers in Whitby for many generations. The family company started with William Edward Hewis (1865-1964) and his two sons, William George (1897-1990) and Harry (1894-1968). Allin Hewis (1920-2008), Harry's son, also worked at the butcher shop.
